How is a word counted?
Words are split the way a reader sees them, using your browser's own text segmenter. Hyphenated words count as one, and numbers count as words.
Do characters include spaces?
You get both numbers: every character including spaces, and characters with spaces removed. That second figure is the one character limits usually mean.
How do you calculate reading time?
Words divided by 200 per minute, the usual pace for silently reading prose. Speaking time uses 130 words a minute, a comfortable presentation pace.
Why is a common word missing from the list?
Short connector words such as the, and, of and your are ignored so the list shows what the text is actually about. You can still see them in the raw word count.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Counting happens in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, emailed or saved after you leave the page.
